Notice of standard revision

ISO 9001:2026 has been published

The International Organization for Standardization has released the sixth edition of ISO 9001, cancelling and replacing ISO 9001:2015. Here's exactly what changed, what it means for your certification, and how DAS Certification can help you transition.

What actually changed

Six targeted revisions, not a rewrite

The ten-clause Harmonized Structure is unchanged — your documentation does not need renumbering. These are the substantive changes your next audit will look for.

Clause 4.1, 4.2

Climate change now considered

Organizations must determine whether climate change is a relevant issue for their QMS, and document the reasoning either way.

Clause 5.1.1, 7.3

Quality culture & ethical behaviour

Top management gains an explicit duty to promote both, and awareness training must now cover them.

Clause 6.1

Risk & opportunity handled separately

What was one combined subclause is now two distinct processes, each with its own actions and effectiveness evaluation.

Clause 6.3

Stronger planning of changes

Three new considerations are added: communication of changes, monitoring effectiveness, and reviewing results.

Clause 3

Core terms defined in-standard

A set of key definitions is printed directly in ISO 9001 for the first time — ISO 9000 remains the reference for the full vocabulary.

Clause 9.3, 10.1

Review & improvement refined

Interested-party changes become a distinct review input, and the two improvement subclauses are consolidated into one.

Get ahead of it

Before your next certification audit

Start now rather than close to the deadline — organizations that struggled in the 2015 transition were the ones competing for audit slots in the final months.

1

Add climate change to your context review and record the determination in writing.

2

Separate your risk and opportunity records so each has its own actions and effectiveness evaluation.

3

Update your change-management procedure to cover communication, monitoring and review.

4

Extend awareness training to include quality culture and ethical behaviour.

5

Add interested-party changes as a standing management review agenda item.

6

Refresh policy & manual references from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is my current ISO 9001:2015 certificate still valid?
Yes. Your certificate remains valid throughout the transition period. You do not need to take any immediate action, but your management system will need to meet the 2026 requirements before your certification can be renewed against the new edition.
Do I need to restructure my QMS documentation?
No. The ten-clause Harmonized Structure is unchanged, so your existing clause numbering and document structure carry over. The changes are targeted additions and refinements, not a redesign.
When exactly does ISO 9001:2015 stop being valid?
The binding transition deadline is set by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), not by DAS or by ISO directly. Based on the pattern used for previous major revisions, a three-year window (pointing to around September 2029) is likely — DAS will confirm the exact date to clients as soon as it is formally announced.
Can DAS certify us directly to ISO 9001:2026 if we're not yet certified?
Yes. First-time certification can be issued directly against ISO 9001:2026. Contact us to discuss a gap assessment and certification timeline.
How do we get started?
Book an Awareness & Transition training session for your team, or request a gap assessment against ISO 9001:2026. Both are available now — see the contact details below.
